How to compare without letting one number decide

The table is designed to expose trade-offs. It is not a ranking engine or an accessibility certification.

Look for the limiting metric

Start by asking what can stop the outing: total distance, a concentrated climb, a steep maximum grade, a long return, an uncertain surface or a group member's energy. A lower total gain does not remove a short steep section, and a high gentleness score does not describe current heat, weather, crowds, construction or access. Use the table to find the metric that needs the most conservative interpretation.

When two routes are close, prefer the one with a simpler turnaround and a clearer backup. The easiest-looking row is not automatically the best choice for every group.

Read route shape with distance and gain

Distance is the total route length represented by the record. Gain is cumulative uphill movement. Maximum grade describes the steepest recorded signal, not the average effort across the route. Route type adds context: a loop may offer more flexibility, while an out-and-back may make an early turnaround easier. These signals work together, and none of them proves that a surface is step-free or that a route is currently open.

Use the time calculator after selecting a candidate. Add time for navigation, water, photos, rest, a child's pace and the return; the estimate is not a schedule.

Use access labels conservatively

“Access signal” is intentionally weaker than a promise. It can summarize available route context such as surface or smoothness, but a label may not capture temporary damage, steps, exposure, snow, mud, crowding, a shuttle requirement or the details of a particular mobility device. If a person's participation depends on a specific feature, verify it with the park directly and ask about the exact segment, approach and current conditions.

What to do after the table shows a preference

Once the table exposes a practical primary route and a backup, open the destination's official National Park Service page. Check current alerts, closures, roads, weather, permits, shuttles, facilities and visitor guidance. If the official page changes the route's feasibility, discard the comparison result and choose the safer or simpler plan.

The comparison records are intended to make a decision more explicit: they show why a route is being considered and which trade-off needs checking. They do not report a same-day opening status, guarantee conditions or replace advice from park staff. The NPS API documentation describes the public source used for NPS snapshots, while methodology explains how stable terrain and live information are kept separate.

  1. Choose the constraint that matters most to the group.
  2. Compare the primary route with a lower-commitment backup.
  3. Verify current official park information before departure.
  4. Ask the park directly when access depends on a specific feature.

Comparison patterns

Three ways a comparison can change the plan

Shorter is not always simpler

A shorter record may still have a sharper grade, a rougher surface, a longer approach or fewer places to turn around. If the group is sensitive to one of those factors, compare the limiting detail rather than selecting the smallest distance.

Lower gain is not a current-condition check

A route with less elevation gain may look attractive, but the official park page still controls closures, weather, smoke, snow, road access, shuttle operations, permits and facilities. Stable numbers narrow the question; they do not answer it.

A backup should change the commitment

If both rows rely on the same road, exposed segment, shuttle or facility, they may fail for the same reason. Choose a fallback with a different commitment or an easier turnaround, then verify that plan with the destination source.

These patterns are useful for explaining why the table shows a trade-off. They are not claims about a particular visitor's ability or about today's trail status. When a decision depends on a specific mobility device, medical limitation, permit, facility or emergency concern, ask the park directly and use the official answer.
